Charles Hartwell

Charles Hartwell died February 5, 2019. He was born April 18, 1934. He was the tinsmith and collector of curious objects at Pioneer Arizona. He was making reflector ovens in Arizona and shipping them to Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. He was the author of “Simple Things” about Shaker tinware and was a tinsmith at Hancock Shaker Village from 1979 to 1987. He learned tinsmithing from Ben Clarkson at Eastfield Village.

From our collection, this piece was made in the early 1980’s for the Hancock Shaker Village evening program.  It was damaged and sat for several years in a closet before being rescued.. It was repaired by a student that Charles had taught and later returned to him before it ended up in our museum.
